 | A Brief History:
This Lutheran Church began as a Sunday School under the leadership of a Missouri Synod laymen, Elmer Toop, in the Fall of 1946. The first worship services were led by the Rev. E. W. Heinricks, Pastor of Bethlehem Lutaheran Church, Missouri Synod, of Yakima and were held at the Terrace Heights Civic Center. During the Summer of 1947 a seminaray student, Luther Russert, conducted services and Pastor W. F. Mueller also served the group for a few months. On July 26, 1949, Terrace Heights Lutheran Church was organized with eight families. Rev. R. Langbecker, Missouri Synod Missionary-at-large for the Yakima Valley, was the first full time pastor. He was installed in November of 1950 and served until August 1, 1951. Rev. H. A. Kahle of Wapato filled in until Easter Sunday, 1952. At this time the group contacted Dr. Foss, President of the Pacific District of the ELC for a pastor and program. A parsonage was built in the Spring of 1953 and Rev. Edmund E. Olson accepted a call as pastor and arrived in June of that year. Under his leadership, plans got under way for construction of the church building. Ground was broken on June 12, 1955 and on August 28, 1955, the cornerstone was laid. This building served our needs for several years, then in 1998 a Fellowship Hall, new kitchen, and Sunday School rooms were added. In 2005 we reached out to the Hipanic population in our area and the name was changed to Tree of Life, A Lutheran Church in Terrace Heights. Many pastors have come and gone since the beginning as have members in our changing society. The Word and Sacraments have been and are now the center of our worship here. Services are conducted each Sunday in both the English and Spanish languages. |
